Form 16 vs Form 26AS — What's the Difference and How to Use Both for ITR Filing
Form 16 and Form 26AS are both TDS-related documents, but they serve different purposes. Many taxpayers confuse them or use only one while ignoring the other. Here is a complete comparison and how to use both correctly.
What is Form 16?
Form 16 is a TDS certificate issued by your employer. It is your proof that your employer has deducted tax from your salary and deposited it with the government.
Form 16 has two parts:
Part A — TDS Details
- Employer's name, address, and TAN
- Employee's name, address, and PAN
- Assessment year
- Period of employment
- Summary of TDS deducted and deposited quarter-wise
Part A is generated from the TRACES portal and must be downloaded by your employer.
Part B — Salary Details
- Gross salary
- Allowances exempt under Section 10 (HRA, LTA, etc.)
- Standard deduction
- Deductions under Chapter VI-A (80C, 80D, etc.)
- Net taxable income
- Tax computed and deducted
Part B is prepared by your employer and may be in their own format.
Deadline: Employers must issue Form 16 by June 15 of the assessment year. For FY 2025-26, the deadline is June 15, 2026.
What is Form 26AS?
Form 26AS (now called Form 168 under the Income Tax Act 2025) is a consolidated tax credit statement maintained by the Income Tax Department. It shows all tax deducted on your behalf from all sources — not just your employer.
Form 26AS includes:
- TDS by employer (salary)
- TDS by bank (FD interest)
- TDS by clients (professional fees, rent)
- Advance tax paid by you
- Self-assessment tax paid
- Refunds received
- High-value transactions
Key Differences
| Feature | Form 16 | Form 26AS |
|---|---|---|
| Issued by | Your employer | Income Tax Department |
| Covers | Salary TDS only | All TDS + advance tax + refunds |
| Format | PDF certificate | Online statement / PDF |
| Password | Date of birth (DDMMYYYY) | PAN lowercase + date of birth |
| Availability | From employer by June 15 | Always available on IT portal |
| Scope | Single employer | All deductors |
Why You Need Both
Form 16 gives you:
- Detailed salary breakup
- Exact deductions claimed by employer
- Employer's computation of your tax
Form 26AS gives you:
- Verification that TDS was actually deposited
- TDS from all sources (not just employer)
- Advance tax and self-assessment tax paid
- High-value transactions
The critical check: The TDS shown in Form 16 Part A must match the TDS shown in Form 26AS. If they do not match, there is a problem.
Common Mismatches Between Form 16 and Form 26AS
1. TDS in Form 16 but not in Form 26AS
Your employer deducted TDS but did not deposit it with the government. This is a serious issue — you cannot claim this TDS credit.
Action: Contact your employer immediately. They must deposit the TDS and file a corrected TDS return.
2. TDS in Form 26AS but not in Form 16
This can happen if you changed jobs mid-year and the previous employer's TDS is in Form 26AS but not in the Form 16 from your current employer.
Action: Collect Form 16 from your previous employer as well.
3. Amount Mismatch
The TDS amount in Form 16 differs from Form 26AS.
Action: Check which is correct. Form 26AS reflects what was actually deposited. If Form 16 shows a higher amount, your employer may have made an error in their TDS return.
How to Use Both for ITR Filing
Step 1: Download Both Documents
- Form 16: Get from your employer
- Form 26AS: Download from incometax.gov.in
Step 2: Verify TDS Matches
Check that the TDS in Form 16 Part A matches Form 26AS. If there is a mismatch, resolve it before filing.
Step 3: Use Form 16 Part B for Income Details
Enter your salary income, allowances, and deductions from Form 16 Part B into your ITR.
Step 4: Add Income Not in Form 16
Form 16 only covers salary income. Add other income from Form 26AS and AIS:
- FD interest (from bank TDS in Form 26AS)
- Dividends (from AIS)
- Capital gains (from AIS)
Step 5: Verify Total TDS
The total TDS in your ITR must match the total TDS in Form 26AS. The IT portal will flag any mismatch.
What if Your Employer Has Not Given Form 16?
Your employer is legally required to issue Form 16 by June 15. If they have not:
- Request formally — Send a written request to HR/payroll
- Use Form 26AS — You can file ITR using Form 26AS and your salary slips
- File a complaint — On the IT portal under "Grievances" if the employer refuses
You do not need Form 16 to file ITR — it is a convenience document, not a mandatory one.
AIS vs Form 26AS vs Form 16
| Document | What It Shows | Use For |
|---|---|---|
| Form 16 | Salary TDS details | Salary income and deductions |
| Form 26AS | All TDS + tax payments | Verifying TDS credits |
| AIS | All income sources | Verifying all income before filing |
Use all three together for a complete picture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Form 16 mandatory for filing ITR?
No. Form 16 is not mandatory. You can file ITR using your salary slips, Form 26AS, and AIS. However, Form 16 makes the process much easier and reduces errors.
What if Form 16 shows wrong deductions?
If your employer has computed deductions incorrectly in Form 16 Part B, you can correct them in your ITR. For example, if your employer did not account for your 80C investments, you can claim them in your ITR.
Can I claim TDS that is in Form 16 but not in Form 26AS?
No. You can only claim TDS that appears in Form 26AS. If TDS is in Form 16 but not in Form 26AS, your employer has not deposited it. Contact them to correct this.
What is the password for Form 16?
Form 16 Part A (downloaded from TRACES) is password-protected. The password is your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format (e.g., 15061990 for June 15, 1990).
