GST Registration Cancellation 2026 — How to Cancel, Revoke, Final Return
If your business closes or your turnover falls below the GST threshold, you can cancel your GST registration. Here is the complete guide for 2026.
When Can You Cancel GST Registration?
Voluntary cancellation:
- Business closed or discontinued
- Turnover fell below the GST threshold
- Business transferred or merged
- Change in business constitution (proprietorship to company)
Suo motu cancellation by department:
- Not filing returns for 6 consecutive months (regular taxpayer)
- Not filing returns for 3 consecutive quarters (composition taxpayer)
- Registration obtained by fraud or misrepresentation
- Business not commenced within 6 months of registration
How to Apply for Voluntary Cancellation
- Login to gst.gov.in
- Go to Services → Registration → Application for Cancellation of Registration
- Fill Form REG-16:
- Reason for cancellation
- Date from which cancellation is sought
- Details of stock held on cancellation date
- Tax payable on stock (ITC reversal)
- Submit
Processing time: 30 days from the date of application.
ITC Reversal on Cancellation
When you cancel GST registration, you must reverse ITC on:
- Stock held on the date of cancellation
- Capital goods (proportionate ITC based on remaining useful life)
- Semi-finished goods and finished goods
The ITC reversal amount must be paid in cash before cancellation is approved.
GSTR-10 — Final Return
After cancellation, you must file GSTR-10 (Final Return) within 3 months of the cancellation date.
GSTR-10 contains:
- Details of stock held on cancellation date
- ITC reversed on stock
- Tax payable
Penalty for not filing GSTR-10: ₹200 per day (maximum ₹10,000).
Revocation of Cancellation
If your GST registration was cancelled by the department (suo motu), you can apply for revocation within 30 days of the cancellation order.
How to revoke:
- File all pending returns
- Pay all pending tax, interest, and late fees
- Apply for revocation in Form REG-21
Important: Revocation is only possible for suo motu cancellation. Voluntary cancellation cannot be revoked.
Consequences of Cancellation
After cancellation:
- Cannot collect GST from customers
- Cannot claim ITC on purchases
- Must file GSTR-10 (final return)
- Must surrender GSTIN

The ITC balance in your electronic credit ledger is forfeited. You cannot claim a refund of the ITC balance on cancellation.
