GST Registration Documents Required in 2026 — Complete Checklist

Share:

Getting GST registration in 2026 is fully online, but many applications get rejected or delayed due to wrong documents, name mismatches, or missing information. Here is the complete, updated checklist for every business type.

Who Needs GST Registration?

You must register for GST if:

  • Your annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh (goods) or ₹20 lakh (services)
  • You supply goods or services inter-state (regardless of turnover)
  • You sell on e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, or Meesho (mandatory regardless of turnover)
  • You are liable to pay tax under reverse charge mechanism
  • You are a casual taxable person or non-resident taxable person

Voluntary registration is also available below the threshold — useful if you want to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on purchases.

New Rule — Bank Account Mandatory Within 30 Days

From March 2026, the GSTN strictly enforces Rule 10A: you must link a valid bank account to your GSTIN within 30 days of registration or before filing your first GSTR-1 — whichever is earlier.

Failure to do so can lead to suspension of your GST registration. Make sure you have a business bank account ready before applying.

Documents for Proprietorship

A proprietorship is the simplest business structure. Documents required:

  1. PAN card of the proprietor
  2. Aadhaar card of the proprietor (actual Aadhaar number — Enrolment ID not accepted)
  3. Passport-size photograph of the proprietor
  4. Address proof of business — electricity bill, rent agreement, or property tax receipt (not older than 2 months)
  5. Cancelled cheque or bank passbook — showing account number and IFSC (mandatory per Rule 10A)
  6. Mobile number linked to Aadhaar — for OTP-based Aadhaar authentication

Important: The name on PAN, Aadhaar, and bank account must match exactly. Even a minor spelling difference can cause rejection.

Documents for Partnership Firm

  1. PAN card of the firm
  2. Partnership deed (registered or unregistered)
  3. PAN and Aadhaar of all partners
  4. Passport-size photographs of all partners
  5. Address proof of principal place of business
  6. Cancelled cheque of the firm's bank account
  7. Authorization letter from partners authorising one partner to sign GST documents

Documents for Private Limited Company / LLP

  1. PAN card of the company/LLP
  2. Certificate of Incorporation (from MCA)
  3. Memorandum of Association (MoA) and Articles of Association (AoA) — for companies
  4. LLP Agreement — for LLPs
  5. PAN and Aadhaar of all directors/designated partners
  6. Passport-size photographs of all directors
  7. Board resolution authorising a director to apply for GST
  8. Address proof of registered office
  9. Cancelled cheque of the company's bank account

Documents for HUF (Hindu Undivided Family)

  1. PAN card of the HUF
  2. PAN and Aadhaar of the Karta (head of HUF)
  3. Passport-size photograph of the Karta
  4. Address proof of business
  5. Cancelled cheque of HUF bank account

Address Proof — What is Accepted?

For the principal place of business, any one of:

  • Electricity bill (not older than 2 months)
  • Municipal property tax receipt
  • Rent agreement (if rented) — must be registered or notarised
  • Consent letter from property owner (if using someone else's premises)
  • Property ownership document (if owned)

Aadhaar Authentication — New Requirement

Since April 2025, the GSTN requires Aadhaar-based biometric authentication for new registrations in many states. This means:

  • The applicant must visit a GST Seva Kendra or designated centre for biometric verification
  • Or complete Aadhaar OTP authentication online (if mobile is linked to Aadhaar)

This step is critical — applications without Aadhaar authentication are put on hold.

How Long Does GST Registration Take?

After submitting all documents:

  • ARN (Application Reference Number) is issued immediately — valid proof of application
  • GSTIN issued in 3–7 working days if no officer query
  • If the officer raises an ARQ (Application Reference Query), you must respond within 7 days

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for GST registration without a physical office?

Yes. You can use your home address as the principal place of business. Provide an electricity bill or property tax receipt for the home address.

Is GST registration free?

Yes, there is no government fee for GST registration. You only pay the consultant's service fee.

What is the turnover limit for GST registration for services?

₹20 lakh for most states. ₹10 lakh for special category states (Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh).

Can I register for GST voluntarily below the threshold?

Yes. Voluntary registration is useful if you want to claim ITC on purchases or supply to GST-registered businesses who need a tax invoice.

What happens if I don't link my bank account within 30 days?

Your GST registration can be suspended under Rule 10A. You will not be able to file GSTR-1 until the bank account is linked.
