How to Apply for TAN Online 2026 — Form 49B Step-by-Step

Share:

Applying for a TAN is quick and almost entirely online. Here is the exact 2026 process using Form 49B.

Quick Answer

Apply for TAN online by filing Form 49B on the Protean (NSDL) TIN portal. The processing fee is ₹55 + GST (about ₹65). No documents need to be uploaded for a TAN — you submit the form, pay, and send the signed acknowledgement if required. The TAN is typically allotted within 7–10 working days.

✓Key Takeaways

  • TAN is applied for on Form 49B; the fee is ₹55 + GST.
  • A TAN application needs no document uploads — just accurate deductor details.
  • Allotment usually takes 7–10 working days.
  • New companies and LLPs get TAN automatically through SPICe+/FiLLiP at incorporation.

Step-by-step: apply for TAN

  1. Go to the Protean (NSDL) TIN portal → TAN → Apply Online → New TAN (Form 49B).
  2. Select the correct category of deductor (company, firm, individual/proprietor, etc.).
  3. Fill the deductor's name, address, and responsible person details exactly as in official records.
  4. Submit and pay the ₹55 + GST fee online.
  5. You receive a 14-digit acknowledgement number — save it.
  6. Depending on the mode, either e-sign or courier the signed acknowledgement to the address shown.
  7. Track status with the acknowledgement number; the TAN is emailed and posted on allotment.

What you'll need before starting

  • Exact legal name of the deductor (as on PAN / incorporation)
  • Office address and contact details
  • Details of the person responsible for deducting tax (name, designation, PAN)

No identity or address documents are uploaded for a TAN — accuracy of the entered details is what matters.

Companies and LLPs: TAN comes with incorporation

If you are incorporating a new company or LLP, you do not file Form 49B separately. The SPICe+ (company) or FiLLiP (LLP) form applies for PAN and TAN together, and both are issued with the Certificate of Incorporation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get a TAN?

Usually 7–10 working days from a clean submission. The TAN is then emailed and the physical intimation posted.

Can I deduct TDS before the TAN arrives?

You should obtain the TAN first. If a deduction is unavoidable, quote the acknowledgement and update once allotted — but the right sequence is TAN first, then deduct.

What if my deductor details change later?

File a TAN change request (same Form 49B with the correction option) — the fee is the same ₹55 + GST.
