Income Tax Refund 2026 — How to Check Status, Why It's Delayed, and How to Claim
Filed your ITR and expecting a refund? Here is everything you need to know about income tax refunds for AY 2026-27 — how to check status, why refunds get delayed, and what to do if yours is stuck.
When Are Refunds Processed?
After you file and e-verify your ITR, the CPC (Centralised Processing Centre) processes it. Refunds are typically credited within:
- 15-45 days for straightforward returns
- 60-90 days if there are discrepancies or the return is selected for scrutiny
The processing time has improved significantly — most refunds for AY 2026-27 are expected within 30 days of e-verification.

Why Is My Refund Delayed?
1. Bank Account Not Pre-Validated
The most common reason. Your bank account must be pre-validated on the IT portal for refund credit.
Fix: Go to Profile → My Bank Account → Add Bank Account and pre-validate your account.
2. PAN-Aadhaar Not Linked
If your PAN is not linked to Aadhaar, your PAN is inoperative and refunds cannot be processed.
Fix: Link PAN-Aadhaar on the IT portal.
3. ITR Not E-Verified
Refunds are processed only after e-verification. If you have not e-verified, do it immediately.
4. Discrepancy in ITR
If the CPC finds a discrepancy between your ITR and Form 26AS/AIS, they may send a notice before processing the refund.
Fix: Respond to the notice within the specified time.
5. Outstanding Tax Demand
If you have an outstanding tax demand from a previous year, the refund may be adjusted against it.
Fix: Check for outstanding demands on the portal and either pay or dispute them.
6. Return Selected for Scrutiny
A small percentage of returns are selected for detailed scrutiny. These take longer to process.
How to Raise a Refund Reissue Request
If your refund failed (wrong bank account, account closed, etc.):
- Login to incometax.gov.in
- Go to Services → Refund Reissue
- Select the assessment year
- Update your bank account details
- Submit the request
The refund will be reissued to the updated bank account within 15-30 days.
Interest on Delayed Refund
If the IT department delays your refund beyond the due date, you are entitled to interest under Section 244A:
- Rate: 0.5% per month (6% per annum)
- Period: From April 1 of the assessment year to the date of refund
This interest is taxable in the year of receipt.
How to Ensure Quick Refund
- File early — File before July 15 to avoid the rush
- E-verify immediately — Do not wait; e-verify on the same day you file
- Pre-validate bank account — Do this before filing
- Link PAN-Aadhaar — Mandatory for refund processing
- Reconcile AIS — Ensure your ITR matches AIS to avoid discrepancies
