Revised and Belated ITR 2026 — Deadlines, Penalty, How to File

Share:

Missed the ITR deadline or made a mistake in your filed return? Here is everything you need to know about revised and belated returns for FY 2025-26.

Belated Return — Missed the July 31 Deadline

If you missed the July 31, 2026 deadline, you can still file a belated return under Section 139(4).

Deadline: December 31, 2026

Late fee under Section 234F:

  • ₹5,000 if total income exceeds ₹5 lakh
  • ₹1,000 if total income is ₹5 lakh or below

Interest under Section 234A:

  • 1% per month on unpaid tax from the original due date to the date of payment

What you lose by filing late:

  • Cannot carry forward losses (except house property loss)
  • Late fee is non-waivable

Revised Return — Correcting Mistakes

If you filed your ITR on time but made a mistake, file a revised return under Section 139(5).

Deadline: March 31, 2027 (extended by Budget 2026 from December 31, 2026)

No late fee for revised returns — you can revise as many times as needed before the deadline.

Common reasons to revise:

  • Forgot to report income (FD interest, dividends, capital gains)
  • Wrong deduction claimed
  • Wrong ITR form used
  • Bank account details incorrect
  • Wrong tax regime selected

How to File a Revised Return

  1. Login to incometax.gov.in
  2. Go to e-File → Income Tax Returns → File Income Tax Return
  3. Select AY 2026-27
  4. Select Revised Return (not Original)
  5. Enter the acknowledgement number of the original return
  6. Make the corrections
  7. Submit and e-verify

How to File a Belated Return

Same process as original return, but:

  1. Select Belated Return under Section 139(4)
  2. Pay the late fee (₹1,000 or ₹5,000) via e-Pay Tax before filing
  3. Enter the challan details in the return
  4. Submit and e-verify

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I file a revised return after receiving a 143(1) notice?

Yes. If you receive a 143(1) notice and the error is in your ITR, file a revised return before March 31, 2027. The revised return supersedes the original.

What if I miss the December 31 belated return deadline?

After December 31, 2026, you cannot file a return for FY 2025-26 voluntarily. The IT department may issue a notice under Section 142(1) asking you to file.

Is there a penalty for not filing ITR at all?

Yes. If your income exceeds the basic exemption limit and you do not file, the penalty under Section 271F is ₹5,000. Additionally, prosecution under Section 276CC can be initiated for wilful non-filing.
