PAN Card Application 2026 — How to Apply Online, Documents, e-PAN
PAN (Permanent Account Number) is mandatory for filing income tax returns, opening bank accounts, and conducting high-value financial transactions. Here is the complete guide to applying for a new PAN card in 2026.
Who Needs a PAN Card?
PAN is mandatory for:
- Filing income tax returns
- Opening a bank account (for transactions above ₹50,000)
- Purchasing property above ₹10 lakh
- Investing in mutual funds or stocks
- Receiving salary above the basic exemption limit
- Any financial transaction above ₹2 lakh
How to Apply for a New PAN Card
Method 1: Online via NSDL (Protean)
- Go to onlineservices.nsdl.com
- Click Apply Online → New PAN
- Select Form 49A (for Indian citizens) or Form 49AA (for foreign nationals)
- Fill in personal details (name, date of birth, address, contact)
- Upload documents
- Pay the fee (₹107 for Indian address, ₹1,017 for foreign address)
- Submit and note the acknowledgement number
Method 2: Online via UTIITSL
- Go to www.utiitsl.com
- Click PAN Card Services → Apply for New PAN
- Follow the same process as NSDL
Method 3: e-PAN (Instant PAN)
For individuals with Aadhaar, you can get an instant e-PAN in 48 hours:
- Go to incometax.gov.in
- Click Quick Links → Instant e-PAN
- Enter your Aadhaar number
- Verify with OTP
- e-PAN is generated and sent to your email
e-PAN is a digital PAN card — it is legally valid for all purposes. A physical card is not required.

PAN Card for Minors
Minors can have a PAN card. The application is made by the parent/guardian:
- Form 49A with parent/guardian's signature
- Minor's birth certificate as proof of date of birth
- Parent/guardian's PAN and identity proof
PAN Correction / Update
If your PAN card has errors (wrong name, date of birth, etc.):
- Go to NSDL or UTIITSL portal
- Select Changes or Correction in existing PAN data
- Fill Form 49A with correct details
- Upload supporting documents
- Pay ₹107 fee
PAN-Aadhaar Linking
Mandatory: All PAN cards must be linked with Aadhaar. Unlinked PANs are inoperative — you cannot file ITR or conduct financial transactions with an inoperative PAN.
