What is Form 16? Everything Salaried Employees Must Know in 2026
If you are a salaried employee, Form 16 is the most important document for filing your income tax return. Your employer issues it every year after the financial year ends. Here is everything you need to know about Form 16 — what it contains, how to use it, and the upcoming change to Form 130.
What is Form 16?
Form 16 is a TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) certificate issued by your employer. It certifies how much tax was deducted from your salary during the financial year and deposited with the government.
Think of it as a receipt from your employer confirming: "We deducted ₹X as TDS from your salary and paid it to the Income Tax Department on your behalf."
Two Parts of Form 16
Form 16 has two parts:
Part A — TDS Details
- Your name and PAN
- Employer's name, TAN, and PAN
- Quarter-wise TDS deducted and deposited
- Acknowledgement numbers of TDS challans
Part A is generated from the TRACES portal and has a unique certificate number. It is the official proof of TDS deduction.
Part B — Salary Breakdown
- Gross salary
- Allowances (HRA, LTA, etc.)
- Perquisites
- Standard deduction (₹75,000 for FY 2025-26 new regime / ₹50,000 old regime)
- Deductions claimed (80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest)
- Net taxable income
- Tax computed and TDS deducted
Part B is prepared by your employer and shows the complete salary computation.
When Does Your Employer Issue Form 16?
Employers must issue Form 16 by June 15 of the assessment year. For FY 2025-26, your employer must give you Form 16 by June 15, 2026.
If your employer has not issued Form 16 by June 15, you can still file your ITR using your salary slips and Form 26AS. But always ask your employer for Form 16 — it makes filing much easier.
How to Use Form 16 for ITR Filing
- Download Form 26AS and AIS from the IT portal — cross-check TDS amounts with Part A of Form 16
- Use Part B to fill in your salary details, deductions, and taxable income in the ITR form
- Verify the tax computation — the tax shown in Form 16 should match what you calculate using the ITR Tax Calculator
- File ITR-1 if you have only salary income, or ITR-2 if you have capital gains or other income
What if Form 16 Shows Wrong Information?
If the TDS in Form 16 does not match Form 26AS, request a revised Form 16 from your employer. The mismatch could be due to:
- TDS deposited late by employer
- Wrong PAN quoted by employer
- Salary revision not reflected
Filing with a mismatch can delay your refund or trigger a notice.
Form 16 vs Form 130 — What Changed in 2026?
Under the Income Tax Act 2025 (effective April 1, 2026), Form 16 has been renamed Form 130. This change applies from FY 2026-27 (Tax Year 2026-27) onwards.
For FY 2025-26 (the current filing season): Your employer will still issue Form 16 as usual. Form 130 will be issued for the first time in June 2027 for FY 2026-27.
Form 130 has three parts (vs two in Form 16) and includes a new annexure that consolidates salary, exemptions, deductions, and final tax liability in one place.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I have two employers in the same year?
You will receive Form 16 from each employer. You need to combine both salary incomes and file ITR-2 (or ITR-1 if total income is below ₹50L and no capital gains). I handle multi-employer cases regularly.
Can I file ITR without Form 16?
Yes. You can use your salary slips, bank statements, and Form 26AS to file ITR. But Form 16 makes it much easier and reduces the chance of errors.
What is the difference between Form 16 and Form 16A?
Form 16 is for salary TDS. Form 16A is for non-salary TDS — issued by banks for FD interest TDS, by companies for professional fee TDS, etc.
Is Form 16 mandatory for ITR filing?
No, it is not mandatory — but it is the most reliable source of salary and TDS information. Always collect it from your employer.
When will Form 130 replace Form 16?
Form 130 replaces Form 16 from FY 2026-27 (Tax Year 2026-27). For the current filing season (FY 2025-26), your employer issues Form 16 as usual.
