Section 143(1)—Intimation — Most CommonRoutine

Automated result after your ITR is processed. Shows tax computed by IT Dept vs what you declared.

What to do

If refund → wait. If no demand → nothing to do. If demand → verify and pay or file rectification.

Section 139(9)—Defective ReturnAction Required

Your ITR has a technical error — wrong form, missing schedule, or inconsistent data.

What to do

Log in to e-Proceedings portal. File revised return in correct form within 15 days.

Section 143(2)—Scrutiny NoticeUrgent

IT Dept wants to scrutinize your return in detail. Triggered by AIS mismatch, large deductions, or unexplained transactions.

What to do

Respond through e-Proceedings with all supporting documents. Get professional help.

IT Dept believes income escaped assessment in a previous year. Can be issued up to 3–10 years back.

Pay within 30 days to avoid further interest. If you disagree, file appeal or rectification.

If demand is correct — agree. If incorrect — respond within 30 days explaining why.

How to Check if You Have a Notice

    Log in to incometax.gov.in with your PAN and password

  2. 2

    Go to Services → e-Proceedings

  3. 3

    All pending notices and their deadlines are listed here

  4. 4

    Also check your registered email — notices are sent there too

How to Avoid Notices

Reconcile AIS before filing

The most common trigger — mismatch between AIS and ITR

File the correct ITR form

ITR-2 for capital gains, not ITR-1

Declare all income

Bank interest, dividends, rental income — all must be declared

Keep documents for 7 years

Rent receipts, investment proofs, bank statements
